Geocache Description:

Petite promenade le long du canal d'Ille-et-Rance à Betton à faire à pied, en vélo, en poussette.
A little trip near the canal of Ille-et-Rance in Betton. You can walk, bike, stroller.

L'idée de relier l'Ille et la Rance par un canal remonte au 18ème siècle. Les travaux débutent en 1804, sans aucun moyen mécanique pour construire les 85 km du canal. Mis en service en 1832, il connait un important trafic de marchandises jusqu'en 1860 et l'apparition du chemin de fer. Le trafic ne cesse alors de décroitre pour s'arrêter définitivement en 1960. Depuis, le canal revit grâce au tourisme fluvial.
The idea to connect the rivers Ille and Rance by a canal dates back to 18 th century. Work began in 1804, without any mechanical tools to build 85 km of the canal. It finished in 1832 and was very used until 1860 (advent of the railway) for freight. Traffic has continued to decrease to fall, to stop definitively in 1960. Since, the canal again thanks to tourism river.

Remarque : le marché de Betton étant très prisé le dimanche matin, les places de parking y sont alors rares !
